Cals Model United Nations (or CalsMUN for short), was an MUN conference hosted by Cals College in the Netherlands. We participated as a group of 13, with 5 of us as committee chairs (administrating debate), 8 as delegates (representing different countries), and of course our lovely teacher Mme Lori.
« The delegates were split between a wide range of committees focused on an equally diverse set of issues. Among these was the Security Council which passed binding resolutions on important actual issues. Another interesting committee was the Crisis Council, into which delegates headed in blind, only learning of the issue in question the day of the conference. Our brave delegate Deniz from the Crisis Council came up with comprehensive solutions on the spot for an impending meteor strike on earth for example.
Of course our chairs weren’t sitting still while the conference was kicking off. They were working very hard to ensure the smooth running of committees they were assigned to, sometimes having to get into heated arguments with conference organizers to protect their delegates. We were one of the most represented schools in the whole conference in terms of chairs, assigned to 4 unique committees.
Besides the conference, we did other things too. We got to explore Amsterdam and experience a variety of different cultures. Their national cuisine was very particular, it was incredible at times, especially the sweets (such as stroopwafels and brownies). We got dizzy just from eating them. The infrastructure and design of the city was also impeccable, this was also true for Utretcht, where we stayed during the conference. Not to run out of positive adjectives, but we likewise visited the two most famous museums in Amsterdam (the Van Gogh museum and the Rijksmuseum).
Overall, the conference and our visit to the Netherlands was very beneficial. We were able to test our skills against people from all across Europe and push ourselves to get better and work harder. And, if I may say so, we were pretty good. »
