« An Alternative Art Map of Istanbul »

Last Friday the photographer Emma Jacobs visited all classes of L3 to launch the project "An Alternative Art Map of Istanbul".

This project will be conducted by two English artists ; Emma Jacobs and Dan Arnold. They will be joining us in L3 English classes and working with the students on this project up until December. The artwork produced will manifest itself into an exhibition which both the artists and students will curate.

“The city is a fact in nature, like a cave, a run of mackerel or an ant-heap. But it is also a conscious work of art, and it holds within its communal framework many simpler and more personal forms of art. Mind takes form in the city ; and in turn, urban forms condition mind. »
 Lewis Mumford

In our English course, we will do an art project « An Alternative Map of Istanbul. » So, we had a guest in our English course yesterday, Emma Jacobs. We talked about how the project will continue, we talked about what art meant to us…. In this project we are going to present İstanbul with photography, dance, art, whatever we want. We are so excited about this project. Also, there is an interesting thing about the project : we’ll have a blog to upload our creations and we’ll be able to show them on the İstanbul map ! Next week, we are going to talk about our ideas with Emma….

Last Friday an English artist, Miss Emma Jacobs came to our school to work with us on a project. The name of the project is « An Alternative Map of Istanbul ». She explained us that art is everywhere, it’s not just a picture or an architecture. We think about the beauties. However, we forget the real beauty, our city ! We are always thinking about our present, past or future but in the meantime we skip all of the art around us. She showed a video of a citizen who recorded the energy of the city with using the traffic in Vietnam, the sunrise, the colors…Miss Jacobs wants us to think how we can create an art of Istanbul. We are going to sign up in a blog and add emotional response to our city, it can be a photograph, a video, a sound. People all around the world are going to meet our emotional, beautiful, historical city with this project.

Obviously it’s not our first art project. Last year we performed « one minute or less » and our videos were very exciting but I think that focusing on video, limited our creativity. Yet on this project we will be able to use all types of sources and we will work on art in our beautiful city « Istanbul ». Some ideas have already come to our minds !.. I hope when the projects are ready to be presented, there will be no more place in the exhibition room.
